Issue 10 – August 2016
I’m a planner. So CEDIA Expo starts for me right after InfoComm. If I’m truly honest with myself, my planning started on the show floor last year. I knew after last year’s CEDIA that we would focus on two things in 2016—window shades and TecVision. Two core product categories that are handmade, individually, in lovely Spiceland, Indiana.
I started by reaching out to Sony to secure one of their 4K projectors. What good is advertising that our surfaces are 4K ready (really 8K ready) if we aren’t going to show it? We’ve done the blah videos, so instead this year we are inviting attendees to try their hand at Project Cars on a PS4 that will be shown on our TecVision XT1300X Nanoperf material. This is a gamer’s dream come true! Add to that some Klipsch speakers for sound, and the experience will be complete. Even better … we’re giving away said PS4! The top ten scores on the show floor will qualify for a shot to take home the system. We’ll also be highlighting our newly redesigned Profile screen. A Vivitek projector will look brilliant on this lighter weight, easier to assemble, thin bezel screen available with all Optiflex surfaces. It’s the largest model of its kind on the market. It can also be a zero edge screen by simply removing the outer trim. We’ve even added the option of LEDs for that extra “wow.” Talk about putting a flat panel to shame!!! Sit for a minute in a pair of Fortress seats and enjoy the show.
Now on to our showstopper … Hopefully you know that Draper started as a window shade manufacturer. We know shades and automation, but we haven’t taken full advantage of our 114+ years of experience. We knew CEDIA would be the time to change that … so we are relaunching Draper shades for the audiovisual market, focusing on our Manual and Motorized FlexShades. It’s time for custom integrators to stop being intimidated by window shades. Embrace this profit center. We can show you how. With new educational and training materials, new fabric options, and new sales tools, we are primed to take back the shade market. Come see a variety of motorized shades—115V, 24V, and battery powered—installed in ways that highlight some of our new fabrics and hardware options. Throw manual shades into the mix, and you’ve got a solution for every room in the home or office. We’ll even be showing off our graphic printing capabilities.
Rounding out our CEDIA experience is an outdoor vignette. Sim 2 offered us their Supercube (in orange … yeah) to shoot onto our motorized Nocturne Screen, designed with a case that is both weather and bug resistant. Our pergola setting is surrounded on one side by our newly redesigned FlexShade Zip and on the other by our Exterior FlexShade. Top it off with our FlexLouver Rack Arm system, and we’ve created a screened-in patio. Have I piqued your interest yet? Are you thinking of automation opportunities beyond the living room and board room?
I hope that as you plan your CEDIA experience, you will include a visit to our booth #3010. If you don’t have a pass yet, use code DraperAV16 to register here (http://expo.cedia.net/register-plan/registration) for free. We’ll see you in Dallas!
Draper’s web-based Projection Planner is designed to help AV professionals input data about their projection system and determine the perfect Draper viewing surface to meet their needs. Enter information such as the type of information being projected; ambient light levels in the room; your projector’s format, lumens, and contrast ratio; projector throw distance; and screen size.
The Projection Planner will immediately present you not only with the perfect viewing surface for your needs, but also the screen models available with that surface.
Measuring the light is key to choosing the right screen surface, and this entire process adds value to your customers’ designs. We often get the question, “how do I compete with online retailers who sell at such a low price?” The answer is to add value! Offer more than a part number. This tool makes that easy!
To try it out, go to the Draper Pro Portal http://www.draperinc.com/draperpro/portal.aspx). Sign in (or get registered) and click on the “Draper Pro Toolbox” link once you’re in. You’ll find the link to the Projection Planner in the Projection Screens section.
This has nothing to do with AV or projection screens. The Olympics have been in everyone’s conversations lately, however, so I thought you’d like this story from Neal Turner, our gym equipment manager, about how Draper helped the U.S. Men’s Basketball team.
“At the Olympic games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Draper is going for gold along with our men’s basketball team. As coach Mike Krzyzewski’s Olympic team that includes the likes of Keven Durant, Paul George, Deandre Jordan, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and many other top NBA stars suits up to take on the rest of the world, it does so after holding its training camp at UNLV’s Mendenhall Practice Center. Team USA dialed in their three point shots, honed their rebounding skills, and practiced their slam dunks in the practice home of the Runnin’ Rebels, which features Draper EZ-Fold backstops.
Draper was proud to have participated in the construction of the state-of-the-art practice facility prior to the start of the 2011 and 2012 season, and we have enjoyed following the recent success of the UNLV basketball team. Draper provided 12 TF-20 Front Braced Forward Folding Ceiling Suspended backstops. The backstops were custom powder coated in a light gray color to closely match the roof structure, which allows the support structure to virtually disappear. Each backstop includes Draper electric winches and safety straps, and four of the backstop feature our shot clock brackets. All Draper products are designed and manufactured to stand up to the highest levels of play from the world’s top athletes, like those who will be defending the USA’s Olympic basketball title.
Draper may not be suiting up or lacing up our high tops, but we will definitely take pride in knowing that we helped prepare Team USA to answer the challenges from the rest of the world. We will revel in each triumph as they advance in the tournament and may even get a little teary-eyed when the Star Spangled Banner is played at the medal ceremony. Go Team USA! Remember—Team Draper is standing behind you every step of the way!
